Cookie Showdown at Brockport Smiles!

Dr. Thaney and the team at Brockport Smiles recently welcomed 52 Varsity and Junior Varsity football players from Brockport High School to the office. The athletes stopped in for some new mouth guards for their upcoming season, but they also left with some pretty full stomachs!

In anticipation of the players stopping by the office, The Brockport Smiles team baked up 12 delicious varieties of cookies for the players to try. The 52 athletes, and even a few parents, took part in our cookie competition, serving as our cookie judging panel.

Cookies at a dental office? We know, we know. It is relatively common knowledge that when sugar breaks down in our mouths it can create a breeding ground for bacteria that eats away at tooth enamel and thus causes cavities. Most traditional cookie recipes contain harmful ingredients, like sugar, that can encourage cavity development, among other things. Flour is another ingredient commonly found in cookie recipes, but unlike sugar it is often underestimated for its cavity making potential. While these ingredients are known to help cause cavities, they are also known for making deserts what they are: Delicious!

For many dental patients, especially those who are prone to getting new cavities, the fight to prevent new cavities from developing is a constant source of worry. Many times people feel they have to forgo deserts altogether in order to avoid cavities. At Brockport Smiles, we don't think this should be the case. That's why Dr. Thaney, with the help of his daughter, baked up a healthy and more 'cavity safe' chocolate chip cookie recipe for the athletes to try. Their goal in baking this cookie: Prove that the fun doesn't have to come out of your diet if you want to remain cavity free.

How did Dr. Thaney magically make cookies healthy?

First he wanted to limit the amount of sugar in the cookies. Sugars from foods and drinks can fuel tooth decay causing bacteria. Since oral health is what your Brockport dentist is all about, cookies without harmful sugars was a must. Dr. Thaney substituted dark chocolate which is lower in sugar and higher in antioxidant than milk chocolate.

Next, Dr. Thaney used Xylitol as a sugar substitute. This natural sweetener has a number of other health benefits...

• It helps buffer the PH of the saliva.
• It is a sweetener that cavity causing bacteria cannot use to cause decay.
• It has less a lower insulin response than normal table sugar.

Of the 12 cookie recipes, there were a handful of notable standouts, but at the end of the day it was Courtney's chocolate crinkles that prevailed as the best tasting cookies. However, Dr. Thaney chalked himself up a small victory. The healthy cookie option was widely accepted by our gridiron guests as a tasty cookie and viable desert option. Second place never tasted so sweet!

Sugar Free Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies
Prep Time: 2 minutes
Cook Time: 13 minutes
Serving Size: 1 cookie
Yields: 24 cookies
· 1 cup Almond Butter
· ¾ (Xylitol)
· 1 Large Egg
· 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract
· ½ tsp. Baking Soda
· ¼ tsp. Himalayan Sea Salt
· 2 oz. Raw Dark Chocolate Chips
1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F
2. In a large mixing bowl, with a large spoon, mix the almond butter, XyloSweet, egg, vanilla extract, salt, and baking soda
3. Stir in the chocolate chips
4. Using a ½ table spoon measuring scoop, spoon the cookie dough onto an ungreased cookie sheet lined with wax paper
5. Slightly flatten by using a fork to make a crisscross pattern
6. Bake for 15-20 minutes
7. Remove from oven and place on cookie rack
8. Let stand for 3 minutes
