TMJ Disorder

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, which are the right and left jaw joints. TMJ problems can appear as pain in the ears, clicking or popping sounds, locking of the jaw and pain in many other areas of the head and neck.
Also known as the great impersonator, jaw joint dysfunction can masquerade as many other problems with a long list of different symptoms, but are usually a result of muscle spasms or inflammation. Consequently, treatment involves controlling muscle stress and reduction of the inflammation. There are many methods of treatment depending on the severity of the condition.
Only an examination by a dentist trained in the recognition and treatment of TMJ problems can determine the appropriate course of therapy for each individual.
