New Patients:

We at the office of Dr. Tod Twichell strongly believe in a comprehensive approach to dental care. The key to maintaining a healthy mouth is control of any and all harmful factors. That’s why we schedule new adult patients with the doctor for a complete thorough exam as well as a cleaning appointment with our hygienist.

During the first part of your appointment, we take the time to get to know more about you and your wants and needs. An up to date series of digital x-rays, if not already available, are necessary to note the condition of supporting bone and roots of teeth as well as decay. Other procedures during the exam include:

  • A soft tissue exam/oral cancer screening
  • An evaluation of your gum condition
  • Check the status of existing fillings,
    crowns or other restorations.
  • Notes are made of wear patterns (may be present in the event of clenching or grinding).
  • A bite relationship evaluation (the way your teeth come together when you bite).
  • Photographs and study models may be taken (molds of your teeth).
  • Intraoral Photos—using a camera shaped like a toothbrush fits easily in your mouth and displays photos on a computer monitor in full color at a enhanced size for easy viewing of your teeth and gums.
  • An evaluation of jaw joints.

Together with your input, our complete exam helps us determine your dental health and needs. We feel it is better to intercept problems while they are small and prevent greater trouble from developing. This may also impact your overall health. Many people are familiar with the correlation between dental disease and general health. This may also impact your overall health. Some examples are the recent studies showing the relationship between gum disease and greater risk of heart disease, strokes and even babies born with lower birth weights.
